Christopher Southgate. This year’s annual Science and Faith Conference takes the theme of God, evolution and the problem of evil.
Dr Christopher Southgate trained as a biochemist at Cambridge, and then worked in research at the Universities of North Carolina and Bath. In 1980 he underwent a profound conversion to the Christian faith. He is currently Dean of Studies of the South West Ministry Training Course, and Research and Teaching Fellow in Theology at the University of Exeter. He is the author of five books of poems, the most recent being Easing the Gravity Field: poems of science and love and the editor of the standard textbook on science and religion, God, Humanity and the Cosmos.
Chris has long been interested in the question - how could a good and loving God create a nature so 'red in tooth and claw'? He explores this in detail in his book The Groaning of Creation. Chris will be asking questions such as was this the only way God could create a world such as this? and are there pelicans in heaven? He will also ask what is the Christian calling in respect of the non-human creation, in this time of ecological crisis? Should Christians be vegetarians? Have we a part in God's healing of creation?
